Engineering a Greener Tomorrow
As part of our
commitment to energy efficiency, we’ve started using new,
environmentally-friendly materials. One of our most recent developments
in Europe is the GUROFLEX-N lead-free casting material made from
renewable raw materials. This solvent-free product is water and
corrosion resistant and is an excellent insulating material.
Raychem / TE Connectivity's medium wall, heat shrinkable BPTM tubing provides insulation enhancement and protection against flash over and accidentally induced discharge.
Particularly useful in confined spaces, BPTM tubing can be used on both circular and rectangular copper or aluminum busbars. On application of heat, the BPTM tubing shrinks snugly over the busbar profile ensuring that the required minimum wall thickness is obtained. Raychem BPTM tubing can be installed easily during large scale production using an oven or in the field using a gas torch or hot air. Raychem BPTM tubing is manufactured from a non-halogen based polymer which has excellent performance in high voltage environments and greatly reduces the noxious and corrosive effects in fire situations.
The use of TE's Raychem BPTM tubing allows equipment designers the freedom to reduce air spacing between busbars, such as in the manufacture of switchgear cabinets where space is at a premium. Raychem BPTM tubing provides flashover protection up to 25kV.

The expanded main component
This is the workhorse of the CSTO kit - the "silicone housing on holdout" - it is stretched quite a lot and when the holdout is removed, it snaps down to a much smaller dimension offering insulation and protection to your cable.
This is the technical name of just that silicone component: CSTP-25-OS-VFM.
The other components of the kit - the braided ground wire, the spring and the adhesive strips.
This product is remarkably simple to install - see the following installation video:
This is yet another TE product that we keep in stock available for same day shipping. HVBT is a high voltage, self-amalgamating tape for round and rectangular bus bars.
HVBT-2-R-01 - Raychem/Tyco Electronics product
Now, before we get started I'd like to talk about this sticker:
Now, that's an important sticker
This is one of the most important stickers I've ever seen on a product. This is not one of those stickers that tells you "don't remove this tag from the mattress" -- and this is not one of those stickers that says "do not stick your fingers in the blender while it is running." This sticker tells you something IMPORTANT. It is a little unusual in most of the heat shrink world for a product to be rolled adhesive side out and there not be a release paper of some kind -- but that is the case for the HVBT. Pay attention to that sticker or your product is not going to install or work properly. Good job Raychem for being as clear as possible.
The HVBT is spiral wrapped around the busbar, applying some amount of heat along the way to prevent ending up with multiple layers of heat shrink that do not shrink because they are insulated by too many outer layers of HVBT.
HVBT is sold in standard quantities of 4 rolls. Rolls are 25 feet long. We can (on occasion) break standard box quantities if necessary, so don't be afraid to ask if you have a smaller requirement than 100 feet of material.
Tyco Electronics has an excellent installation video that shows just how easy this product is to install. You can see it below:
Joint Specialists is now stocking HVT-Z-80-G/SG. We keep a number in stock (and about 50 other Tyco Electronics / Raychem products) so feel free to check with us for current inventory levels. We do ship most of our items same day from our warehouse in Conroe, TX.
Going to start a series where I highlight / spotlight one Raychem / Tyco Electronics product each day. Today we are looking HVT-Z-80.
First the product summary: 5/8 kV, 1/C indoor/outdoor termination kit for copper tape, wire shield, and unishield cables.
Nominal use range: #4 - #1 AWG 5kV or #6-#2 AWG for 8kV.
Insulation OD Range: .35-.60" (9-15mm)
Max Cable Jacket Diam: .95" (24mm)
So, what comes in a kit?
This is the kit you get when you buy an HVT-Z-80-G/SG
Let's take a closer look at this though, breaking down into smaller pictures:
Raychem Red non-Tracking Tube and 2 Red Mastic Strips
1 Yellow Angle-cut mastic strip and 2 strips of copper backed tape
Solder blocked braid and a ground clamp spring
That is what you will get every time you order a single HVT-Z-80-G/SG.
Now let's take a look at an installation video for HVT-Z (not 80)
Why is the Raychem CST better than some of the other competitive options in the marketplace?
One advantage is that
it has a large misplacement range. Typically, when a termination is
misplaced, it is towards the lug end. We created our stress cone with a
very large Faraday cage region to account for this. The customer has
well over 1” of area they can land the semi-con cutback of the cable and
still have effective stress control. We don’t advocate for sloppy
workmanship but we do want to try and give the installers as much help
as we can.
In
addition, we developed a new EZ-Pull holdout which not only has a much
lower overall pull force, but is very consistent in the force. This
prevents the “jerking” that can happen with other holdouts. It is hard
to put how much better the holdout feels into words since it is a very
“touch” related thing. Installers are raving about this improved feature.
Other
advantages:
Our CST uses a geometric stress control with void-filling
mastic rather than a different option
The CST indoor term also has
mini-sheds that improve creepage distance, but still allow for
installation in tight-fitting areas.
Lower cost than the alternatives in the market.
TE Connectivity's Raychem CST cold shrink terminations are the one piece solution for high performance in cold applied terminations for polymeric cables up to 28kV. CST offers a reliable, fast and easy to install system to ensure trouble free service. All components are pre-expanded on an easy to remove spiral hold out allowing installation in compact environments on prepared cable.
The silicone body is specially formulated for excellent tracking and erosion resistance. The extra long stress cone aids in correct positioning and integrated void-filling mastic eliminates the need for silicon grease. Sealing mastic for the lug end is built into the expanded termination eliminating the need for additional sealing tapes. Shearbolt and compression style terminals and pin connectors are available to provide reliable connection to a variety of conductors.
CST components have full trace ability to raw materials and are in compliance with the following international standards: IEEE-48, CENELEC HD 629.1.S2 (includes IEC, BS, VDE and other international specifications).
Here we are looking at two different products. One is BBIT - Bus Bar Insulation Tubing. The other is BPTM which is a medium wall tubing with a slightly lower voltage rating.
BBIT is a heavy wall tubing for use on straight or bent bars where maximum clearance reduction...or 35 kV insulation is required.
BPTM is a medium wall tubing for use on straight or bent bars where some clearance reduction or 25kV insulation is required. These heat shrinkable tubes for straight and bent busbars are extremely flexible, allowing them to be easily positioned on busbars and quickly installed using a gas torch or oven. They have a high expansion ratio, so each size of tubing fits a range of busbar sizes. Both BBIT and BPTM tubing are ideal for original equipment assembly and for retrofit applications where access to one end is available.
Both BBIT and BPTM tubings are also ideal for protection against accidental bridging caused by birds and animals.
MCK is available in a number of different variations. Which one do you need? That all depends on what you're working with.
Type V: The type V kit is designed to splice the stub or butt configuration that is commonly used where there is insufficient room to make in line connections.
Type L: The type L kit is used where space permits to splice in line connections.
MCK-5 is rated to the general electrical requirements of the IEEE-48 withstand tests.
For use as an in line or stub splice between 1/C poly feeder cable and motor leads. Tyco Electronics (formerly Raychem) motor connection kit provides excellent insulation sealing and resistance to abrasion in motor connections.

CBR products seal breakouts in multi conductor cables and conduit. These seals are made of tough, crosslinked polyolefin to provide mechanical protection and strain relief. CBR seals have an adhesive coating on the body and the legs to form a durable watertight seal, and conform tightly to conduits and cable jackets.
For use on standard poly or elastomeric insulated/jacketed multi conductor cables or cables in metal or plastic conduits.
See the CBR sizing chart above. Standard parts are:
Tyco Electronics / Raychem's wrap around mining repair sleeve provides an efficient method of repairing insulation on flexible cables to 2 kV and repairing jacket damage on high voltage cable where a splice is not required.
MRS - Mining Repair Sleeve
The specially formulated, flame retardant, flexible wraparound sleeve installs with a low profile quickly and easily, which means the cable can be returned to service in minutes. The sleeve is ideal for use on trailing cable as well as flexible construction cables and conduits.
MRS is MSHA approved (No. P137-MSHA) for rejacketing flexible and mining cable and as a primary insulation up to 2 kV.
MBSM repair sleeves (heat shrinkable) protect cables in mechanically abusive environments. They also rejacket premolded splices. MBSM also repairs and rejackets LC shielded and moisture impervious cables. MBSM is also used to provide strain relief to cables.
MBSM is available in five different sizes; all supplied with a 5:1 shrink ratio (that is a high, high shrink ratio). It is designed to be used on standard poly or elastomeric insulated / jacketed cables which may include aluminum or steel armoring. MBSM provides a moisture vapor transmission barrier for repairing and rejacketing LC shield and moisture impervious cables. MBSM sleeves do not provide electrical insulation.
The first letters (MBSM) are simply the material type
The first numbers (43, 75, 125, 160, 200) are all the supplied ID of the tube
The second numbers (8, 15, 30, 42, 50) are all the fully recovered OD of the tubes (fully shrunk)
The last numbers (1200) is the length of the tube in millimeters (or 4 feet long).
Raychem's CRSM-CT is a wrap around, sealed cable tap splice. Utilizing a rail and channel closure mechanism, CRSM is able to stay together in the shape of a tube during the shrink process while still holding onto its high expansion full recovery.
Designed to be used on 1000 volt and lower cables, CRSM can cover a multitude of different cable sizes, removing the need to stock multiple supplied and recovered dimension products.
Rayvolve RVS Splice cover kits are the easy roll on way to insulate and seal cable connections up to 1000 volts. The gripping force of the specially formulated EPDM elastomer combines with the high performance sealant to form a water resistant, insulating sleeve that is UL listed and CSA certified for direct burial application over in line compression connectors.
Rayvolve splice cover sleeves feature a dual wall design with an entrapped lubricant, making installation fast and simple. The elastomeric sleeve rolls onto the cable with minimal effort, even at temperatures below -15F.
The cable can be energized immediately. It is ideal for use where gas and electric heating devices are not approved or allowed due to safety concerns.
Gel wrap splice closures (manufactured by Tyco Electronics; formerly manufactured by Raychem) quickly and conveniently insulate and seal buried electrical connections rated up to 1000 volts. The robust and compact design is engineered to handle the harsh environments of direct burial and manhole applications. Gel wrap splice closures are equally well suited for insulation and jacket repair.
Installers will appreciate the simple wrap around design and dependable gel sealing performance. Simply wrap and snap the closure on any cable in the use range. The gel in the closure seals on contact. Installation is literally a snap. The gel wrap splice closure can be applied on all common compression connectors and low voltage cables. Many in line mechanical connectors can be covered as well.
The factory cured power gel silicone sealant in the gel wrap closure completely encapsulates the connection. Since the gel is easily stretched and very stick, it basically forms around the cable and connector sticking to everything including itself. Moisture cannot enter the splice.
Gelwrap is available in a number of different sizes:
RNF-100 is a flexible, flame retardant, thin walled, general purpose heat shrinkable polyolefin (a modified polyethylene) tubing. Available in many different colors (but the clear tubing is not flame retardant).
RNF-100 is ideal for wire jacketing, marking and color coding different wires and cables. This tubing is sold with a 3:1 shrink ratio and an unlimited shelf life when stored under proper conditions.
Sold in rolls that can be anywhere from 25 feet long to 500 feet long; RNF is a multi functional product that is excellent to have on hand for many different possible uses.
Here we see the sizing chart. This chart shows catalog nomenclature, ID as supplied, ID as recovered, recovered wall thickness and standard feet per spool options.
